Tallest Statues in India 2024

It would not be wrong to call India the ‘land of statues’. Because if we consider all kinds of small and big statues standing in this country, their number will be not in thousands but in millions.

While compiling the list of tallest statues i.e. ranking the statues, either the height of the main statue alone or the height of the statue including the pedestal is measured. One of these two criteria has to be applied for all statues.

In this article, the 10 tallest statues in India are ranked by measuring the combined height of the statue and its pedestal. Among these tallest statues in India, two statues are also of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. It is also important to know the rank of both these statues. Let’s know about the tallest statues in India….

10. Hanuman statue, Andhra Pradesh (135 ft)

Paritala Anjaneya Temple is a temple with a huge statue of Lord Hanuman. It is the third tallest statue of Hanuman in India. It is also the 10th tallest statue in India.

The statue is located at Paritala village on NH-65, approximately 30 km from Vijayawada city in the state of Andhra Pradesh.

The statue was installed in 2003 and stands 135 feet (41 m) tall. A 125-foot statue of Hanuman stands on a temple-like platform of about ten feet.

 

9. Vaishno Devi statue, Uttar Pradesh (141 ft)

The colossal statue of Vaishno Devi is installed at Vrindavan in Uttar Pradesh, with a total height of 141 feet (43 m). This statue of Vaishno Devi is ranked 9th among the tallest statues in India.

In the statue, Vaishno Devi is shown sitting on a lion and Hanuman is also depicted bowing before her. Vaishno Devi holds eight different weapons or objects in her eight hands, namely mace, conch, bow, sword, trishul, chakra and lotus.

The statue is 141 feet high from the ground. The height of the lion from the ground is approximately 35′-6″ feet. The statue of Hanuman is 32 feet tall and his mace is 26 feet long. The height of Maa Vaishno Devi alone is about 102 feet.

 

8. Murugan statue, Tamil Nadu (146 ft)

In April 2022, the world’s tallest statue of Lord Murugan (Kartikeya) was unveiled at Puthiragoundanpalayam in Salem district of Tamil Nadu. The height of this idol is 146 feet.

Built by the Sri Muthumalai Murugan Trust at Puthiragoundanpalayam, the statue is taller than the Pathumalai Murugan statue in Malaysia, which stands at 140 feet.

Apparently, the Murugan statue of Malaysia inspired the creation of the statue in Salem. Sri Muthumalai Murugan Trust Chairman N Sridhar wanted to build the tallest statue of Murugan in his hometown Attur.

According to reports, Sridhar thought that not everyone could go to Malaysia and worship the deity there so he should bring one to Salem district. Later in 2014, Sridhar, who is also a businessman, decided to build a temple and Muthumalai Murugan statue on his land.

Sculptor Thiruvarur Thiagarajan made this statue. Interestingly, he was the same sculptor who built the statue of Murugan in Malaysia in 2006. Sridhar took about two years to start the process of building this statue.

 

7. Panchamukhi Hanuman Statue, Karnataka (161 ft)

The 161 feet tall Panchamukhi Anjaneya Swamy (Hanuman) statue stands in Bidnagere, Karnataka. It is the 7th tallest statue in India.

On the occasion of Ram Navami, on 10 April 2022 Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai unveiled a 161 feet tall Hanuman statue at Bidnagere Basaveshwara Math.

This statue is the second tallest Hanuman statue in India. It is a Panchmukhi statue of Hanuman with ten arms and five mukhas (mouths).

6. Lord Hanuman Statue, Andhra Pradesh (170 ft)

The statue of Hanuman is located on the banks of the Vamsadhara River at Madapam in Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. It is the tallest Hanuman statue in India with a height of 171 feet (52 meters).

The construction of this statue cost approximately 1 crore Indian rupees. Not only in India, it is also the tallest Hanuman statue in the world.

 

5. Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Statue, Telangana (175 ft)

A grand statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar is located in Hyderabad, the capital of Telangana. The Ambedkar statue is the 5th tallest statue in India, the 3rd tallest standing statue in India, and the 2nd tallest statue of Dr Ambedkar in the world.

The statue of Dr. Ambedkar is a total of 175 feet (53.34 meters) high, in which the height of the main statue is 125 feet (38.1 meters), and the height of the base building is 50 feet (15.24 meters). The statue was built by sculptor Ram V. Sutar.

On 14 April 2023, on the occasion of 132nd birth anniversary of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, Telangana Chief Minister Chandrashekhar Rao unveiled a grand 175 feet tall statue of Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar.

This Ambedkar memorial is spread over 11 acres. In 2017, the Telangana government had decided to install a 125 feet tall statue of the architect of the Constitution in the state. The cost of making the statue was Rs 146.5 crore.

 

4. Statue of Social Justice, Andhra Pradesh (206 ft)

The Statue of Social Justice is a 206 feet tall statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar has been erected in Vijayawada in the state of Andhra Pradesh. It is the fourth tallest statue, and the second tallest standing statue in India. It is also the tallest statue of Dr. Ambedkar in the world. The statue stands in the ‘Dr BR Ambedkar Smriti Vanam‘ (Dr BR Ambedkar Memorial) at Dr BR Ambedkar Swarajya Maidan, Vijayawada. The entire memorial is spread over 18.81 acres.

The main statue of Babasaheb is 125 feet (38.1 m) tall and stands on an 81 feet (24.69 m) high plinth or pedestal. The total height of Ambedkar’s statue including the pedestal is 206 feet (62.79 m). The construction of the statue and the memorial will cost approximately ₹404 crore. This statue is 31 feet taller than the grand statue of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar built in Hyderabad.

The Chief Minister of the state Jagan Mohan Reddy had laid the foundation stone of the 125 feet tall statue and memorial of Babasaheb on 9 July 2020. The Statue of Social Justice unveiled on January 19, 2024 by CM Jagan Mohan Reddy.

 

3. Statue of Equality, Telangana (216 ft)

The Statue of Equality is a statue of the Indian philosopher and Bhakti saint Ramanujacharya (1017 – 1137), located at Muchintala in Ranga Reddy district, on the outskirts of Hyderabad, Telangana. This statue of Ramanujacharya sitting in meditation is the second tallest sitting statue in India.

The main statue of Ramanuja is 108 feet (32.9 m) tall. The height of its platforms ie Bhadra Peetam is 54 feet, and the height of Padma Peeth is 27 feet. The total height of this statue including the lower surface is 216 feet (65.8 meters). The Tridandam (which the Vaishnava Peethadhipati carries with him) in his hand is 135 feet high.

This Statue of Equality of Ramanujacharya is the third tallest statue in India. This statue has been made from 120 kg gold in Bhadrapeetam. The reason for taking 120 kg gold is that Ramanujacharya lived for 120 years.

On February 5, 2022, Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled the ‘Statue of Equality’. The project to build the statue was conceived by the trust to celebrate the 1,000th birth anniversary of Ramanuja, costing ₹1,000 crore. The entire project is spread over 45 acres.

The Statue of Belief or Vishwas Swaroopam is a statue of Lord Shiva at Nathdwara in Rajasthan. It is the second tallest statue in India, and the fourth tallest in the world.

The height of the main statue is 348 feet (106 m), and the statue including the plinth is 369 feet (112 m) tall; The plinth is 110 feet (34 m) tall. It is the tallest statue of Lord Shiva in the world, and the tallest seated statue in the world.

The statue was unveiled on 29 October 2022. The statue was planned in 2011, construction began in 2016 and was completed in 2020.

The Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world, located near Kevadia in the state of Gujarat. It is a statue of Vallabhbhai Patel (1875-1950), the first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister of independent India and a leading figure in the Indian freedom struggle.

The total height of the Statue of Unity is 240 meters (790 feet). The base of the statue is 58 meters (190 ft) and the main statue is 182 meters (597 ft). The statue was built by sculptor Ram V Sutar.

The statue project was first announced in 2010 and construction began in October 2013. The Sardar statue was unveiled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 31 October 2018 on Patel’s 143rd birth anniversary.


Among these 10 tallest statues, one statue each is located in five states namely Gujarat, Rajasthan, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh. While the two Telugu speaking states Telangana (2) and Andhra Pradesh (3) have five statues.

Among the 10 tallest statues in India, six are of mythological figures while the other four are of historical figures. Among these 10 statues, there are two statues of Dr Ambedkar, three statues of Hanuman and one statue each of 5 others.
