The Ambedkar family (Marathi: आंबेडकर कुटुंब; Hindi: आंबेडकर परिवार) is a socio-political family of India. This is the family of B. R. Ambedkar (14 April 1891 – 6 December 1956) who was an Indian polymath, human rights activist, the architect of the constitution of India and the founding father of the Republic of India.

Dr. Ambedkar’s followers and the Indian people started respectfully addressing him as “Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar“, since September 1927, because millions of Indians consider him the “greatest liberator”. The honorific Babasaheb (Marathi: “Respected Father“, “Venerable“), first applied to him in 1927 in Maharashtra, India, is now used throughout the world.
Ambedkar Family background
Ambedkar family was of Marathi background from the village of Ambadawe (in Mandangad taluka) in Ratnagiri district of modern-day Maharashtra, India. Ambadawe village is the origin of the Ambedkar family. Dr. B. R. Ambedkar’s ancestors lived in this village, and at that time their family name or surname was “Sakpal“.
Maloji Sakpal (Dr Ambedkar’s grand-father) was a soldier in the army of British India, and later his son Ramji Sakpal (Dr Ambedkar’s father) served as a Major-Subhedar in the army of British India. Ramji married Bhimabai. The couple had 14 children, the last of them was Bhimrao. Bhimrao was born on 14 April 1891 in the town and military cantonment of Mhow (now Dr. Ambedkar Nagar) in the Central Provinces (now in Madhya Pradesh).
Bhimrao was also known by his other name as Bhim, Bhima, Bhiva and later Babasaheb as wll as Dr. B. R. Ambedkar. Bhimrao’s surname was Sakpal but his father Ramji Sakpal registered his surname as “Ambadawekar” in the school, meaning it comes from their native village of Ambadawe. Bhimrao’s Devrukhe Brahmin teacher, Krishna Keshav Ambedkar, changed his surname from “Ambadawekar” to his own surname “Ambedkar” in the Pratap Singh High School’s records.
In 1909, Dr. Ambedkar married Ramabai Ambedkar. They had five children – Yashwant, Gangadhar, Ramesh, Indu (daughter) and Rajratna. Apart from Yashwant (1912–1977), the other four died in under their two years age. Yashwant alone survived as his descendant. His second wife Savita Ambedkar had no children. Yashwant married Meerabai. They have four children – Prakash, Rama (daughter), Bhimrao and Anandraj. Rama married Anand Teltumbde, a scholar, social activist and professor.

First generation of Sakpal family
- Maloji Sakpal, a soldier in the British army of India. He was the grandfather of Bhimrao [Dr. Babasaheb] Ambedkar.
Second generation of Sakpal family
Maloji Sakpal had five children including four sons and a daughter.
- Meerabai Sakpal, the daughter of Maloji Sakpal, elder sister of Ramji Sakpal and aunt of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. She had taken care of child Bhimrao (Babasaheb).
- Ramji Maloji Sakpal (14 November 1838 – 2 February 1913), also known as Ramji Ambedkar, was a social activist, a Subedar-major in the army of British India, and the father of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Bhimabai Sakpal (14 February 1854 – 20 December 1896), also known as Bhimabai Ambedkar, a daughter of Laxman Murbadkar, the first wife of Ramji Sakpal and the mother of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. In 1896, she died that time Babasaheb was five years old.
- Jijabai Sakpal, the second wife of Ramji Sakpal and step-mother of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar.
Last generation of Sakpal family and first generation of Ambedkar family
As Bhimrao adopted the surname ‘Ambedkar’, his descendants started using that surname.
Ramji and Bhimabai had total 14 children including three sons, four daughters, and other seven died in his childhood.
- Balaram Ramji Sakpal (Balaram Ambedkar), was an elder brother of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Ganga Lakhavadekar, was an elder sister of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Ramabai Malavankar, was an elder sister of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Anandrao Ramji Sakpal (Anandrao Ambedkar) (?-1918), was a brother of Babasaheb Ambedkar. He had taken up a job for the sake of educating his younger brother.
- Manjula Yesu Pandirkar, was an elder sister of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Tulsa Dharma Kantekar, was an elder sister of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Bhimrao Ramji Ambedkar (14 April 1891 – 6 December 1956) alias Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar, was the last child of Ramji Sakpal and Bhimbai Sakpal.

- Yashwant Bhimrao Ambedkar (1912–1977), also known as Bhaiyasaheb Ambedkar, was only survived son of Babasaheb and Ramabai Ambedkar. He was social activist, editor, Buddhist activist and politician. He was the second President of the Buddhist Society of India. He was a member of the Maharashtra legislature.
- Meerabai Yashwant Ambedkar (born 1935) is the wife of Yashwant, and the daughter-in-law of Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar. She served as the third president of the Buddhist Society of India.
- Mukundrao Anandrao Ambedkar (1913 – 3 February 1959), the nephew of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Saileja Mukundrao Ambedkar, the wife of Mukundrao.

Yashwant and Meera had four children – three sons and a daughter.
- Prakash Yashwant Ambedkar (born 1954), is the eldest grandson of Babasaheb Ambedkar. He is a politician, lawyer and the president of political party called Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.
- Anjali Prakash Ambedkar, is former professor, sociopolitical activist and the wife of Prakash Ambedkar.
- Ramabai Anandrao Teltumbde, is the only granddaughter of Babasaheb Ambedkar. She is the wife of Anand Teltumbde, an intellectual and human rights activist. They have two daughters.
- Bhimrao Yashwant Ambedkar, is the second grandson of Babasaheb Ambedkar.
- Darshna Bhimrao Ambedkar, is the wife of Bhimrao Ambedkar.
- Anandraj Yashwant Ambedkar (born 2 June 1967), is the youngest grandson of Babasaheb Ambedkar. He is a politician, and the president of political party called Republican Sena.
- Manisha Ananraj Ambedkar, is the wife of Anandraj Ambedkar.

- Ashok Mukundrao Ambedkar (1955-2017), was a grandson of Anandrao, a brother of Babasaheb Ambedkar. He served as the fourth president of the Buddhist Society of India.
